Extreme lateral interbody fusion surgeries are usually performed with short OR times, minimal blood loss and few complications, according to an article published in Spine.
A total of 84 patients who were treated with XLIF were examined in a literature review. The researchers found that the average OR time was 199 minutes. Additionally, the average blood loss was 155 mL, and the average length of stay at the hospital was 2.6 days.
The review also found that preoperative complication rates were 2.4 percent, and postoperative complication rates were 6.1 percent for patients undergoing XLIF. After a mean follow-up of 15.7 months, 68 patients showed evidence of solid arthrodisis and no subsidence on CT and flexion/extension radiographs. The procedure was also found to be cost-effective.
