AAOS integrates with American Joint Replacement Registry, to roll out more registries in 2018: 5 key notes

Practice Management

The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons is integrating with the American Joint Replacement Registry and plans to create a national family of clinical data registries in the future.

Here are five things to know:

1. AJRR is a national hip and joint replacement registry that covers 970 hospitals and 40 ASCs across the country. The registry launched in 210 and has data on more than 1 million knee and hip replacement procedures.

2. AAOS' integration with AJRR and planned family of registries will be a centralized group of orthopedic registries designed to provide standardized and consistent data to the industry as providers transition to value-based care. "A central group of orthopedic registries, providing standardized and consistent data, will allow us to optimally develop education programs that address practice and treatment deficiencies, and most importantly, continually and collectively improve patient safety, treatment and outcomes," said AAOS President William Maloney, MD.

3. The integration is effective immediately; however, AJRR will continue to operate as usual without interruption at existing sites under the AJRR name. The additional registries are expected to begin launching in mid-2018 and continue over the next five years. The data will include both inpatient and outpatient procedures.

4. The integration will expand AJRR and enhance its data collection capacity, according to AJRR Board of Directors Chair Daniel Berry, MD. "We look forward to a continuing seamless relationship with our partners and participating facilities as we move forward," he said.

5. Nathan Glusenkamp will serve as AAOS director of orthopedic registries. He has experience as president of provider solutions at FIGmd, a HIT vendor delivering data liquidity interfaces to medical societies and boards. He also oversaw the American College of Cardiology's Pinnacle Registry prior to joining FIGmd.
