UAMS to build proton therapy center for spine, brain tumors

Practice Management

Arkansas' first proton therapy treatment center is being planned for the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Radiation Oncology Center in Little Rock, according to a July 15 KATV report.

Three things to know:

1. UAMS, Arkansas Children's Hospital, Baptist Health and Proton International signed a letter of intent to bring the novel therapy to Little Rock.

2. Proton beam therapy treats tumors of the spine, brain and neck. It increases the precision of radiation therapy with less toxicity and side effects on patients.

3. Currently, there are about 40 proton therapy centers in the U.S.
