California hospital acquires spine surgery robot — 4 insights

Robotics

San Ramon (Calif.) Regional Medical Center is the first hospital in the Bay Area to purchase an ExcelsiusGPS system for spine surgery, the Danville SanRamon reports.

What you should know:

1. Surgeons use the robot to plan the procedure and then to assist with the procedure as it happens.

2. The robot improves the safety and accuracy of spine procedures and provides real-time images of a patient's anatomy.

3. The robot also has minimally invasive components that allow surgeons to make smaller incisions along the spine, contributing to shorter hospital stays and better patient outcomes.

4. San Ramon has a history of investing in surgical robots, acquiring the multispecialty da Vinci XI Surgical System and the Mako System for joint replacement procedures in the past.
