Rome, Ga.-based Floyd Medical Center performed its first robot-assisted surgery, according to a Nov. 5 press release.

The surgery done Nov. 4 used the da Vinci Surgical System, the release said. That system allows greater precision and control during minimally invasive procedures. It's optimized for bariatric, gynecological, urological and thoracic surgeries.

"Floyd has always been a leader in laparoscopic and minimally invasive surgeries," Ryland Scott, MD, surgeon and medical director at the hospital, said in a statement. "This certainly takes surgeries to the next level."

Floyd Medical Center received approval for the robot in August, Becker's Spine Review reported.
