Physician-owned hospital acquires 2nd ExcelsiusGPS spine robot

Robotics

Northwest Specialty Hospital in Post Falls, Idaho, is one of three hospitals and the first private hospital in the U.S. to acquire two ExcelsiusGPS spine robots.

As a surgical observation center for spine procedures, surgeons from across the country and internationally have visited the hospital to train in the robotic technology.

Roland Kent, MD, of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho-based Axis Spine Center is one of the surgeons who provides training for Globus Medical's ExcelsiusGPS.

"These systems allow surgeons to achieve a higher level of surgical precision and better outcomes in less time, which is important for improving patient care and is at the center of everything we do at Axis Spine," Dr. Kent said in a May 5 news release.

ExcelsiusGPS enables surgeons to create 3D preoperative plans using the patient's anatomy and then guides them through that plan intraoperatively.

The robot's latest update helps surgeons navigate disc preparation, trialing and interbody insertion through a rigid arm-mounted retractor, according to Globus Medical.
