Colorado Springs, Colo.-based Penrose-St. Francis Health Services installed Globus Medical's ExcelsiusGPS robot in July, The Gazette reported July 20.
"Spine surgery is a game of millimeters," Douglas Crowther, DO, told The Gazette. "If you have a screw that’s off just a couple of millimeters and touching a nerve or compressing a nerve, the patient could have chronic pain."
ExcelsiusGPS assists surgeons by providing scans of a patient's anatomy before surgery. It also lets surgeons eliminate the use of radiation imaging during procedures.
Penrose-St. Francis Health Services is reportedly the first hospital in southern Colorado to use the system.
