Geisinger hospital marks 1,500th robot joint replacement

Surgeons with Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre (Pa.) reached the hospital's 1,500th case with the Mako robot.

The milestone case was a knee replacement completed by Douglas VanderBrook, MD, Geisinger said in an April 5 news release. 

"The precision of a robotic joint replacement requires less soft tissue dissection, often resulting in a more cosmetic scar and less postoperative swelling," Dr. VanderBrook said in the relase. "It is one of the most significant advances in the field of joint replacement in history."

Mako is designed for total knee, total hip and partial knee replacements. It has preoperative planning toold and assists surgeons in the operating room.
