Zimmer Biomet's shoulder robot gets FDA approval

Robotics

Zimmer Biomet earned FDA clearance for the Rosa Shoulder robot, the devicemaker said Feb. 22.

Rosa Shoulder will be the world's first robotic system for shoulder replacement, and it is Zimmer Biomet's fourth application for Rosa robotics, according to a news release. The robot is one of the only systems to reproduce humeral head resectioning and assists surgeons with preoperative planning and execution.

The robot will be commercially available in the U.S. in the second half of 2024. That puts Zimmer Biomet on pace to release Rosa Shoulder ahead of its competition, as CEO Ivan Tornos predicted in February 2023.

Another large devicemaker, Stryker, has its own plans for a shoulder robot and aims to launch it toward the end of the year.
