As robotic-assisted surgeries become more popular in operating rooms nationwide, here are some of the companies leading robotic surgeries in the orthopedic space:
1. Stryker: Stryker acquired surgical robotics company Mako Surgical Corp. for $1.7 billion in 2013. Since then, it has launched additional Mako hip and knee replacement tools. As of 2019, Stryker had placed 650 Mako robots worldwide, and the devices were used in 76,900 knee and hip replacement procedures performed in 2018.
2. Medtronic: Medtronic acquired Mazor Robotics, maker of the Mazor X Stealth robotic system, for $1.7 billion in 2018. The spine robot has since been used across the nation, with training facilities in over 25 U.S. states.
3. DePuy Synthes: Johnson and Johnson's orthopedic arm, DePuy Synthes, launched the Velys robotic system in 2021. Velys helps surgeons with precise operation techniques for use during total hip replacements.
4. Zimmer Biomet: Zimmer Biomet's Rosa system won FDA clearance in 2019. It can be used in total knee replacements and spine surgeries. The company acquired Rosa from a French firm in 2016 for $132 million.
5. Globus Medical: Globus' ExcelsiusGPS robotic system is used in spine surgery to improve accuracy and precision. It is approved for use in cervical, thoracic, lumbar and iliac cases.
