The Detroit VA's orthopedic surgery department completed its first robotic-assisted hip replacement procedure.
The surgeons used the Mako robot system, which creates a 3D image of the operation area to allow the surgeon to determine the size and shape of the implant for surgery, according to a Setp. 19 news release.
The system minimizes risk, enhances surgeon accuracy and improves recovery for the patients.
The Detroit VA Healthcare system is the first VA in the region to integrate the Mako robot, the release said.
