New research has found that the use of bone morphogenic proteins in anterior and posterior lumbar fusions was linked with shorter hospital stays, lower infection rates and greater in-hospital costs, according to Healio. Steven Fineberg, MD, presented the study at the International Society for the Study of Lumbar Spine Meeting.
BMP is used in more than half of the anterior lumbar fusions in the U.S. and about one third of posterior lumbar fusions. Patients receiving the drug are typically younger with fewer comorbidities, according to the report.
