DJO Global Launches Electric Stimulator to Combat Post-Knee Surgery Muscle Atrophy

Spinal Tech

San Diego-based DJO Global launched its Empi Phoenix electrical stimulator for before and after total knee replacement surgery and ACL repair.

The stimulator helps treat muscle atrophy through electrotherapy treatments during rehabilitation. The treatments also manage pain and reduce swelling. The Empi Phoenix received FDA 510(k) clearance in May.

Michael Levine, MD, was the lead researcher on the device's clinical trial for effectiveness. His year-long study was released in Orthopedics Today, and it showed patients who receive neuromuscular electrical stimulation have similar outcomes as patients with standard post-operative physician therapy.
